Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin

Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin

Although dry and dehydrated skin can be similar in many ways - in many other ways, they are very different from each other.

Read to learn the differences between dry and dehydrated skin, and the solution to combat both skin conditions.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is the result of the reduction of sebum from the sebaceous glands. Due to this reduction the skin can feel rough, dull looking, appear to be flaky/scaly, and can also be quite itchy and irritating as well.

Sebum is the oily substance, what can often be called as 'natural oils'. These 'natural oils' are created from fats that coat, moisturize, and protect the skin from getting dry. However, because this function has been reduced, dry skin is considered a medically recognized condition - due to the bodies inability to create a sufficient amount of sebum.

Coincidentally, dehydrated skin can appear with the same symptoms of dry skin. Dehydrated skin can be itchy, dull, and quite irritating as well. However, dry and dehydrated skin are not the same thing.

Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin is caused by extreme elements (like the weather) which deplete the skin's water content, and can cause a less supple appearance. Like dry skin,  the skin can appear dull, fell itchy, the appearance of fine lines are more prominent.

However, unlike dry skin, dehydrated skin is not medically recognized and can be treated with lifestyle changes - such as drinking more water.

Despite these two differences, the method used to combat dry and dehydrated skin is much like knocking two birds down with one stone.

The Solution

To combat dry & dehydrated use an emollient immediately after a shower to trap in water on the surface of the skin.

For dry skin, emollients soften the skin as they fill in the rough and sebum depleted spots to make the skin feel smooth.

For dehydrated skin, emollients protect the skin's water content by preventing moisture evaporating from the skin. An example of emollients are Shea Butter, Glycerine, and Jojoba Oil.
